Morning trip to Toledo from Madrid
On this excursion to Toledo from Madrid, get to know the most important monuments of the three civilizations that coexisted at a time in this city: Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
We offer you two alternatives to explore Toledo in a morning:
1.- Walking tour through the historic center with entry to a damascening workshop, the traditional art of inlaying gold and silver into steel.
2.- Walking tour of the historic center, including a visit to the cathedral.
At the end of either option you choose, you will have free time to continue exploring the corners that have captivated you the most.
During our excursion to Toledo, you will stroll through its streets and discover the most representative temples of the three cultures that once coexisted in harmony, giving the city its nickname: “The City of the Three Cultures.”
We will begin our tour at the Mirador del Valle (Valley lookout), from where you will enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city surrounded by the Tajo River. From here, you will be able to spot some of its most iconic landmarks, such as the Alcazar and the Cathedral.
As you walk through the historic center, you will notice that Toledo has preserved the same layout of streets and houses it had in the 16th century, when it was the capital of the Kingdom.
Walking through this labyrinth of steep, cobbled, and narrow streets, typical of Toledo, is a unique experience, but it is not recommended for people with reduced mobility.
One of the key stops on our route is Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square), where you will find the City Hall, the Episcopal Palace, and the impressive Cathedral of Saint Mary.
The Cathedral of Saint Mary is the most imposing monument in Toledo. This 15th-century Gothic temple is remarkable for having a single tower instead of the usual two. During the visit, the guide will reveal the reason behind this curious feature and will answer all your questions about the city, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you choose the option that includes the guided visit to the Cathedral, you will be able to admire the treasures it holds inside, such as its medieval stained-glass windows, its main altarpiece, and paintings by El Greco, Caravaggio, Titian, and Goya.
Another must-see stop is the Church of Santo Tomé, where you will find El Greco’s famous painting The Burial of the Count of Orgaz. During your free time, you will have the chance to enter and admire it up close.
In the old Jewish Quarter, we will stop in front of the façade of the Synagogue of Santa María La Blanca, an Arab-style temple built by Mudejar craftsmen in the 12th century under commission from the Jewish community. If you wish, you can visit it on your own during your free time.
If you choose the visit to the damascening workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn about this traditional craft up close and purchase unique souvenirs from Toledo, such as replicas of ancient swords and armor.
